Sky Plantation
Sky Plantation is a photographic series acquired by the World Meteorological Foundation in Geneva. Conceived as a critical stand against corporations like Monsanto, it challenges issues of production by presenting the fields of a soy plantation in Brazil that seemingly comes under threatening skies and clouds. At one point, the clouds turn into a giant mushroom that resembles the atomic bomb, in a symbolic expression of the growing threats in agricultural industries. In Brazil, agricultural expansion has become an alarming issue, especially around the Amazon rainforest in Mato Grosso, where intensification and mechanisation of agriculture due to rapidly rising demand for soybeans has accelerated all collateral processes and had negative impact on people and their farmlands. Brazil is the second largest producer of soybeans in the world; the Amazon is one of the richest biodiversity areas in the world, providing vital ecosystem support.
