Shakti
Shakti is a photographic series exploring the propelling movement of a bicycle wheel in parallel to a female body. The title of the series echoes the feminine creative energies in the world as dynamic forces of empowerment and primordial cosmic energies. Such creative and dynamic forces counter the limits of historical time frames and provide an insightful perspective on the physical and mental motion of human beings. The project was inspired by Eadweard Muybridge’s pioneering work in motion-picture projection and stop-motion photography. The photographs have been realized using a Holga middle size Lomo camera, which enabled me to expose the same film frame to multiple photographic momentary seconds, in tune with my own feelings to the depicted situation. My intention was to show the dialogical relation between two different moving bodies – the bicycle as a physical means of transportation and the female body as source of feminine creative energy. This way, Shakti is the expression of the ‘vehicles’ and motions of life in everyday situations and the universe.
